Starting to like Obama

So although nothing to much is happening with immigration you can see Obamas people have taken over the government. (Ok I know its not like that but kind of is) Anyway he apparently gave regulation of Tobacco over to the FDA. Do you have any idea how long the FDA have been trying to get their hands on Tobacco. Well now they have it and are getting running start. I know this because my sister was going to send me some clove cigarettes that I wanted from the States. My husband and I are not smokers but like to have an occasional clove cig on the weekends here and there. A pack would have lasted us a few months. Anyway my sister wrote today to say that all flavored cigarettes have been band from being sold in the US. This was due to studies showing that most people that smoked them were under the age of 25 and many of them thought they were better for them than normal cigarettes. Anyway here are some links. And although I'm a little bummed that I didn't get my cloves I'm glad that things are moving in a good direction up north.

  1. I have to disagree with you on this one. If the FDA can declare flavored cigarettes illegal, what is going to stop them from declaring all tobacco products, including the raw plant itself illegal? And then what is going to stop the government from declaring everything it deems bad for us illegal? The Constitution does not allow for the FDA or any government body to impose its moral authority over its citizenry in any capacity. Instead, it protects the citizens' freedom to make their own choices concerning lifestyle habits such as smoking. If you are an adult, shouldn't you be free to make your own choices, including if you want a clove cigarette once in a while? I thought America was founded upon freedom, and to me, I don't think allowing the government telling me that I can't be a responsible adult by having a clove cigarette represents that.

  2. In Mexico you are more free. you don't need a prescription for medications. I sort of equate this clove thing to the prescription thing. Everyone is already used to having to have a prescription for drugs but if we are to be honest about this the governement is already controlling us. There are a million ways the US government already controls everything we do. The question is, what thing is crossing the line? I'm sure when the 'no open containers of alcohol in your car law' started in the 1970's everyone said the same thing. "I don't need the government to tell me what I can drink in my own car." Or the seatbelt laws. Or now there are cell phone laws. Building codes. Labor laws. discrimination laws. I mean where does it start and when will it stop. The US is a much safer place but in Mexico you are more free. Thats all there is to it.

I just wanted to say to you Amanda, that Yes, I too am optimistic. Truly optimistic and I have much faith. Hope you and babies are well.

  5. Leah- I just cant help it but I have to say, this is far from taking someones freedom. Like the studies showed there were actually few older people who smoked them. And most likely, like myself none of them are to upset by this. The FDA controls all drugs and is the reason you can trust what is on your bottle when you buy it. (unlike here) If it were not for the FDA there would be many deaths due to many reasons that are controllable. If this makes America not free at least its safe. But I'm glad you posted your true feelings and always feel free to do so on my blog. ;)
And as for the rest of you- Three cheers for the FDA. ;)
