Fair and Expo

This week was the culmination of the Tepabril festivites. We went to the fair which had a free circus with the tickets and we also went to the animal expo. Both were great fun although Alana and I were still getting over a stomach infection for the fair. I have no idea what we had or how we got it but it didn't go away until we took antibiotics and it was pretty nasty until then. I will post a few pictures of the fair and expo here. A few of the pictures are of the pictures of saints that people put on the rides. It never fails to amaze me where people will put these things and how they will adorn them. I don't do or say this to offend any Catholics out there it is just different here and they do this kind of thing more. Aside from things like this and some different foods the fair just feels like a fair and same with the expo except at home those two were always together and not in separate places.

  4. What you said about the saints reminded me of one of the strangest things I have seen here (other than the Santa Muertes and stuff to protect the drugistas, but that is another story.)

My husband is from Tuxtepec, home of the largest brewery. They make Corona, Modelo, and Victoria. Every Dec. 12th they celebrate El Dia de la Virgin (de Guadelupe) at the brewery. They have all these shrines to the Virgin of Guadelupe. But with a twist, almost all are make with beer bottles and/or cans prominently displayed. San Juan climbing the hill to The Virgin with beer bottles all around like a huge halo, or the Virgin in the middle of a diorama of brewery with the gigantic silos where the beer is stored made from Modelo beer cans. It was really funny to me, but everyone else takes it very seriously. It was hard to get good pictures because of the time of morning (5:30 AM). There is a lot of "hocus-pocus", and indigenous beliefs added to the Catholic church in Mexico, and I find the mix very interesting. It is also interesting watching the way a country where it is assumed you are Catholic is different than what we are used to in the US. It is nice to be able to compare with others from the US, I also don't want to offend anyone, but some stuff is just so strange to us.

  6. Karen, that really is to much, my husband and I agree that we would have a hard time taking that seriously and would be holding back laughter.
